Stay Hydrated, Stay Healthy
It’s beginning to warm up here in South Louisiana. If you have ever spent a summer in the south then you know that it can get more than warm in the summer. As much as I love spending time outdoors, staying healthy is something I enjoy more. One of the easiest ways to stay healthy in the outdoors this summer is to make sure you stay hydrated. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do, not just in the summer months but any time. Our bodies are mostly water and if that water is not replenished then it will not function to the best of its abilities. I’ve been dehydrated a few times and it is NOT fun. One of the easiest ways to avoid dehydration is make sure you prepare when you go on outings. Bring more than what you think you need. I’d also recommend some kind of drink that replaces your electrolytes. Most sports drinks do just that.
If you feel you are getting dehydrated, then find some shade, rest and get some fluids in. When I was at camp one time, the nurse made you play the shot game. You take a shot of water then a shot of electrolyte sports drink until your urine is clear. If that is not possible, then drink what you have slowly. If you drink too quickly then you could cramp up even more. Once you feel better, make your way to get a drink with electrolytes in it. You will start to feel better soon.
With all this being said, enjoy your time in the outdoors and share it with others! Don’t forget to stay hydrated.
