Paddling
and hiking in the “BIG BEND” of Florida
Saturday, Feb. 21st - Saturday, Feb. 28th, 2009
What the ‘big bend’ area of Florida offers is an unusual concentration of variety of paddling opportunities, Black water rivers, narrow high banked creeks, crystal clear spring fed streams, tidal estuaries and salt water bays hidden behind barrier islands. There are also hiking and birding opportunities in a nearby national forest and a national wildlife refuge.
The plan is to base camp at a Florida State Park and then each day set out to paddle a different type of waterway. In the evening, on the way back to the park, we will dine at a local seafood restaurant or cook ourselves an outdoor meal. The week will conclude with our paddlers having had a week of varied paddling experiences in the “big bend” of Florida.
Schedule: Everyone is to meet at the Ochlockonee State Park located south of Tallahassee by Saturday evening, February 21st. Beginning Sunday, we will then have six and one half days to explore this corner of Florida. The outdoor week will end at noon on Saturday 28th.
The leader will be: Byron Almquist who has led numerous
local and out of state outings.
The leader provides: his guide services, canoes and individual and group camping equipment, breakfasts (7) and some of the evening meals plus pay for all camping fees.
Individuals furnish: transportation to Florida, outdoor clothing, footwear and raingear, lunches for seven days and some evening meals at restaurants.
Trip fee: For one adult the fee will be $395 and for two related adults $750. With each reservation, a deposit of $200 is asked. The balance is due at the pretrip meeting. If you furnish your own canoe/kayak there is a credit of $50.
Pretrip meeting on: no meeting scheduled at this time.
