Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation Schedule
2004 -2005 Schedule

Sunday, Dec. 5th -- Hike into the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge near Bogalusa. At this time of the year, this bottomland hardwood forest should be at its driest. Our hikers may be able to walk on the floor of the basin – even into dry gum and cypress ponds.

Sunday, Dec. 26th -- Twilight paddle into the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in eastern New Orleans. Our paddlers will be looking for the flocks of migratory waterfowl that visit the refuge during the winter. At sunset, we will hope to witness the flocks of wading birds that come to roost in the refuge.

Sunday, Jan. 9th -- Hike into Lake Ramsay Preserve near Covington.
Explore the rare long leaf savanna with its carnivorous plants and riverine habitat of the Tchefuncte River.

Sunday, Feb. 20th -- Paddle into the Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge. Paddle through the ponds and channels of the marshes and along the unspoiled shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain.

Sunday, March 6th -- Float historic Bayou Liberty west of Slidell.
Learn about how development in the floodplain has increased flood risk. Residents will describe the changes they have observed.

Sunday, April 10th - Witness springtime in the LaBranche Wetlands west of New Orleans. Signs of spring will include wild irises in bloom and vibrant green of the cypress foliage.

Sunday, May 1st -- Paddle in the Bogue Chitto N W Refuge north of Pearl River. Explore the hidden sloughs, gum ponds and bottomland hardwoods of the forested Pearl River Basin.

Sunday, June 5th -- Paddle the upper Tangipahoa River north of Hammond. Water quality has been improving due to measures taken in recent years by residents and the LPBF.

Sunday, Sept. 25th -- Paddle into Honey Island Swamp east of Slidell. The waters of the Pearl River have been altered in recent years. See the consequences of this program at low water.
