Pontchartrain Basin Foundation Schedule
2004 -2005 Schedule
Sunday, Dec. 5th -- Hike into the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife
Refuge near Bogalusa. At this time of the year, this bottomland hardwood forest
should
be at its driest. Our hikers may be able to walk on the floor of the
basin – even into dry gum and cypress ponds.
Sunday, Dec. 26th -- Twilight paddle into the Bayou Sauvage National
Wildlife Refuge in eastern New Orleans. Our paddlers will be looking
for the flocks
of migratory waterfowl that visit the refuge during the winter. At sunset,
we will hope to witness the flocks of wading birds that come to roost
in the refuge.
Sunday, Jan. 9th -- Hike into Lake Ramsay Preserve near Covington. Explore the
rare
long
leaf savanna with its carnivorous plants and riverine habitat of the Tchefuncte
River.
Sunday, Feb. 20th -- Paddle into the Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge. Paddle
through the ponds and channels of the marshes and along the unspoiled shoreline
of Lake
Pontchartrain.
Sunday, March 6th -- Float historic Bayou Liberty west of Slidell. Learn about
how
development in the floodplain has increased flood risk. Residents will describe
the changes
they have observed.
Sunday, April 10th - Witness springtime in the LaBranche Wetlands west
of New
Orleans. Signs of spring will include wild irises in bloom and vibrant green
of
the cypress
foliage.
Sunday, May 1st -- Paddle in the Bogue Chitto N W Refuge north of Pearl
River. Explore the hidden sloughs, gum ponds and bottomland hardwoods
of the forested
Pearl
River Basin.
Sunday, June 5th -- Paddle the upper Tangipahoa River north of Hammond. Water
quality has been improving due to measures taken in recent years by residents
and the
LPBF.
Sunday, Sept. 25th -- Paddle into Honey Island Swamp east of Slidell. The
waters of the Pearl River have been altered in recent years. See the consequences
of
this
program
at low water.
Sunday, Oct. 9th -- Paddle the Tchefuncte and Bogue Falaya Rivers near
Covington.Another major clean up effort by citizens and the LPBF. What
has been done and
is yet
to be done.
Sunday, Nov. 13th -- Hike into the Bogue Chitto NW Refuge. In the autumn, hikers
can
often walk through the forests that covered the floodplain of the Pearl River
basin.
Sunday, Dec. 11th --Twilight paddle into Bayou Sauvage N W Refuge in
eastern
New Orleans. In the winter, flocks of migratory waterfowl populate the ponds
and
bayou
of
this no hunting zone.
